Global flooding is one of the most pressing issues in the era of climate change. An increase in the earth’s average temperature results in changes in weather patterns which have a significant effect on rainfall intensity in various parts of the world. This phenomenon not only has an impact on the environment, but also on human life, the economy and the ecosystem. Climate change increases water vapor levels in the atmosphere. Every increase in global temperature by one degree Celsius can increase air humidity by up to seven percent. With more water vapor, the likelihood of extreme rainfall increases. In areas that previously experienced moderate rainfall, the intensity of the rain can change drastically to become very heavy rain, causing flash floods. Floods that occur due to extreme rain have a serious impact on infrastructure. Roads, bridges and buildings are often not designed to withstand high volumes of water at one time. The economic losses resulting from damage to this infrastructure can reach billions of dollars. For example, the floods that hit Jakarta in 2021 resulted in economic losses of almost 5 trillion rupiah. The impact of global flooding is also felt in the agricultural sector. Crops can be damaged by excessive water, which ultimately affects food security. In developing countries, where dependence on agriculture remains high, flooding can have fatal consequences for farmers’ livelihoods. This can lead to famine and increase social instability. Ecosystems are not immune from the impact of changes in rain intensity. Many species cannot adapt quickly to these changes. Floods can destroy natural habitats, disrupt the life cycles of various species, and cause a decline in biodiversity. For example, mangrove ecosystems that are late in recovering after being submerged in water often cannot support marine life as before. Mitigating extreme floods requires a holistic approach. Sustainable water management policies, environmental restoration and improving green infrastructure are important steps in reducing the impact of flooding. Developing an early warning system can also help communities prepare for disasters. Awareness of climate change must continue to be increased. Public education about the positive impacts of protecting the environment will create a more caring and involved society. Community initiatives, such as reforestation and building green open spaces, have the potential to better absorb water and reduce the risk of flooding. By creating data-based policies driven by scientific research and cross-sector collaboration, the world can work together to reduce the impact of increasing global flooding. A better understanding of climate change enables proactive action in preserving the environment for future generations.
